Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Global Tariffs in Landmark Ruling
The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a rare rebuke to presidential trade authority, ruling 6-3 that the TRUMP administration overstepped its powers by imposing sweeping global tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion, declaring the International Emergency Economic Powers Act doesn't authorize such unilateral trade actions.
The blocked tariffs included 25% duties on most Canadian and Mexican imports, 10% on Chinese goods, and blanket 10% levies affecting nearly all trading partners. The dissent, led by Justices Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh, argued for broader executive discretion in trade emergencies.
